The Software Design Engineer IV designs software for customers’ products and related applications and coordinates software engineering strategies.

Benchmark is seeking a software engineer with experience in the development of custom electronics. Desired individual would have expertise with device driver development, kernel modifications, medical device design experience, test protocol and methods development.

Location: Winona, Rochester or Arden Hills, MN.




Essential Functions and Competencies

Level IV
  • Demonstrates strong problem solving skills and the ability to make sound technical decisions.
  • Demonstrates ability to assemble and present technical presentations in a support of technology exchange.
  • Demonstrates day to day self directed project activity organization in accordance with software development procedures.
  • Requires little supervision for completion of tasks.
  • Demonstrates a strong understanding of software programming techniques and is able to utilize this level of understanding to creatively and effectively design software for products and assemblies based on various applications and technologies.
  • Makes independent judgments using sound engineering principles an techniques.
  • Demonstrates detailed knowledge of programming techniques for multiple software languages, many include the following, but not limited to, CC+, Assembly, Basic, Visual Basic, HPVEE, Perl, etc.
  • Demonstrates analytical skills and advanced troubleshooting of software code and interface circuits.
  • Demonstrates a superior understanding of software programming techniques and is able to utilize this level of understanding to creatively and efficiently design software for products and assemblies base on various applications and technologies.
  • Master of advance technologies.
  • Leads or participates in a continuous improvement activity with complete documentation including a follow up review with the team in a presentation format.
  • Understands requirements of regulated industries such as medical, DOD, and aerospace.

Qualifications / Education / Experience
Level IV
  • Provide assistance and technical leadership to Hardware Design, Mechanical Design, PCB Design, Functional Test, and ICT test for product, test, and tooling development.
  • Identifies and communicates technical challenges and implements solutions.
  • Drive software design and strategy development discussions on Benchmark customer team(s).
  • Develops and deploys processes and systems within the workgroup.
    Participates in identification and development of advanced / new technologies.
  • Provides research and development for new methods for software design and the utilization of software and hardware tools.
  • Recognized senior expert for technical problem solving beyond the use of typical methods.
  • Investigates new technologies and implements a plan to infuse new technologies and design solutions.
  • Designs and documents sophisticated and complex software for customer products and/or related application to support the manufacturing environment, meeting both the customers’ requirements and internal manufacturing requirements.
  • Creates highest level documentation related to a software design project.
  • Contracts and works with hardware, software and equipment vendors on the most complex issues.
  • Develops large scale and complex project proposals and associated cost estimates.
  • Performs senior level Design for Excellence (DFX) reviews and creates necessary documentation.
  • Communicates with customer technical personnel regarding senior level technical issues.
  • Develops new technologies and implements a plan to infuse new technologies as design solutions.
  • Develops and drives common software architecture across the department.
  • Mentors others on software design architecture and practices.

Level IV

  • Master of advanced technologies and applications preferred 15+ years experience; engineering expert in advanced technologies and applications;
  • Provides technical support to project team members and on complex projects.
  • 5+ years in a leadership role.

Level IV

  • 4 year engineering or technical degree preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience as approved by executive management.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in the management and leadership of medium scale software development projects.
  • Able to organize and lead software development projects, communicate requirements, status, schedule and quality metrics with internal and external customers.
  • Experience in Agile software development methodology.
    Experience developing software architectures for customers’ products and related applications and coordinates software development strategies and activities.
  • Should be an engineering expert in embedded software architecture development.
  • Provides technical, communication and administrative support to project team members and external customers.
  • 10+ years of experience in software development activities with at least 5 years of experience in software project management or leadership.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering.
  • Master’s degree preferred.
