Job Summary
Electrical Designer II with our Design Engineering Team

Location: Rochester, MN

The Electrical Designer Responsible for supporting the design and development of complex customer products by creating and maintaining PCB artwork, engineering drawings and associated documentation required for complex printed circuit board fabrication and assembly.





Essential Functions and Competencies

  • Focus on design and documentation for customer PCBAs and/or related tooling, resulting in a product or tooling that supports the manufacturing environment, if applicable, to meet both the customers’ requirements and the Benchmark manufacturing support groups’ requirements
  • Assist Benchmark’s Manufacturing and Test work groups in developing and implementing Design for Manufacturability/Design for Test (DFM/DFT) techniques
  • Communicate technical challenges and work with peers to create and implement solutions
  • Communicate with customer technical personnel regarding technical issues
  • Contact and work with hardware, software and equipment vendors
  • Develop an understanding of Design For Excellence (DFX) philosophy; Promote with customers
  • Develop and follow project plan; Report project status to leadership
  • Develop project proposals and associated cost estimates
  • Make Engineering computations and write/edit specifications
  • Process engineering change orders
  • Verify completed work, checking dimensions, materials to be used and quantities, per the verification plan
  • Assist BEI Manufacturing and Test work groups in developing and implementing DFM/DFT techniques
  • Assist in the quoting and scheduling as required
  • Assist with research and implementation of new and advanced CAD tools
  • All employees are responsible for the Quality of their work to ensure BEI meets, or exceeds Customer Satisfaction.
  • Interacts with other internal departments affected by design development
  • Creates and maintains engineering drawings and other design documentation
  • Coordinate quoting and scheduling activities required to complete the PCB Design
  • Create new or modified designs for new or existing PCBAs
  • Develop and maintain proficiency as an expert user of Benchmark's electronic CAD
  • Generate schematics and documentation for manufacturability and testability, printed circuit board assembly and fabrication drawings
  • Interact with vendor to ensure proper fabrication of PCBs, test and tooling
  • Interface and communicate with internal and external customers regarding PCB project requirements, status, and facilitation
  • Perform moderately complex to complex double sided and multi-layer printed circuit board design; Assist in the documentation and verification of the artwork
  • Provide technical expertise on printed circuit board designs
  • Work with customers to understand requirements regarding PCB design
  • Develop and coordinate the design process, material selection, material availability, material costing and analysis for printed circuit board design and fabrication
  • Develop and maintain proficiency as an intermediate user of Benchmark's electronic CAD
  • Generate printed circuit board quotes as required
  • Perform librarian functions for creating footprint libraries conforming to BEI’s internal Design for Manufacturing (DFM)/ Design for Test (DFT) and customer guidelines

Qualifications / Education / Experience
  • Demonstrate regular, consistent attendance; Ability to support an all shift production environment
  • Demonstrate discretion, confidentiality, judgment and professionalism when representing the company
  • Ability to perform sedentary work involving the use of a computer for six hours per day
  • Ability to travel up to 10-20% of the time, including day and/or overnight travel
  • Ability to make independent judgments using sound engineering principles and techniques
  • Ability to work well individually or in teams
  • Demonstrate ability to assemble and present technical presentations in support of technology exchange
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills, both written and verbal, required to interact with co-workers, customers and vendors
  • Demonstrate effective interpersonal skills, teamwork, and effective problem solving skills
  • Will demonstrate the ability to interpret notes, verbal instructions, and rough/detailed sketches
  • Demonstrate effective use of Computer Aided Design (CAD) software and computer hardware
  • Demonstrate excellent mathematical, analytical and drafting skills
  • Demonstrate strong problem solving skills and the ability to make sound technical decisions
  • Intermediate knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications

  • Demonstrate a strong knowledge of material selection for manufacturing customer PCBs

  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of electronics principles
  • Demonstrate ability to create and check others detailed drawings of PCB design and components using industry standard drafting practices
  • Demonstrate knowledge of PCB design techniques
  • Demonstrate thorough understanding of advanced PCB technologies
  • Demonstrate day-to-day self-directed project activity organization in accordance with ECAD development procedures

    Level I
  • Some drafting experience preferred
  • Experience or training using computer aided design tools

    year Design or Technical degree preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience as approved by executive management
