As announced this spring, Benchmark Electronics is relocating its corporate headquarters and building an Engineering Design Center of Excellence in Tempe, AZ. This design center will provide EW and general radio infrastructure solutions for our customers in military, medical, industrial, and telecommunications market segments, growing to greater than 200 employees in about 3 years. Essential Functions and Competencies

Communication Systems Intern The candidate will design a millimeter wave MIMO environment in MATLAB. Our Antenna Engineers will optimize the antenna structures in this environment based on various material sets and processes we are investigating. The DSP candidate must make provisions in the MIMO model to account for the radiation pattern of each antenna structure. The goal would be to create a baseline from a reference material set and process and then compare performance of the various structures. Due to the frequencies of interest, the traditional iid Rayleigh fading model will not apply, so an appropriate channel model must be utilized. The intern will work alongside the antenna designer(s) whose design environment is HFSS. Mechanical Engineering Intern The Intern will create models and engineering drawings utilizing SolidWorks. Will also be responsible for checking drawing/design packages for proper content and to ensure compliance with applicable industry and military standards. Duties will include checking designs for fit, function, manufacturability, cost and assist Senior Engineering staff. Responsibility will further include liaison with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality and Materials. Software Developer Intern The candidate will help create a test automation platform. The platform will be used to run RF characterization and verification tests of our designs. There are two areas of interest that we are targeting interns for. The first is the platform GUI. Here the intern must consider function, aesthetics, and ease of use. The design of the GUI must then highlight these key features. The second area of interest are the test modules that form the test library. Each module will be designed to run a specific test. Test programming will require knowledge of the test itself and be made adaptable to the changing test environment. A subsection of the test module development is the ability to collect data from the RF devices, analyze that data, and present it in the application in an easy-to-interpret user interface. Digital Prototyping Intern The intern will be a part of the predictive modeling team that is tasked to build out a library of digital prototypes of various RF structures and components. Example structures that will be designed in HFSS are Phased Arrays, Rat Race Couplers, Directional Couplers, Wilkinson and T Dividers, Grounded Co-Planar Waveguides, and other transmission lines on a PCB. Example components are SMA connectors, Backshorts, wire bonds to landing pads to BGA balls, etc. All structures and components will operate at frequencies from 20MHz to over a 100GHz. Power Management Design Intern Candidate will help design and implement the power management and control system architecture of a new design. To do this, the Candidate will work closely with the lead designer to understand and interpret the customer specifications and then research and choose the appropriate topologies and components that is needed to accomplish the task. This position requires academic coursework designing operational amplifiers, linear and switching regulator topologies such as LDOs, Buck, Boost, voltage/current references, and state control theory. An understanding of digital interfaces such as I2C, SPI, UART, RS232 is a plus. PCB Design Intern The intern will conduct design feasibility studies to evaluate the PCB design goals for packaging, cost, manufacturing, and system performance. Will also assimilate the schematic, parts list, engineering concept, customer requirements and other data as required to plan a design layout: outline, layer setup, component placement, and signal routing. Will also assist with research of novel substrates (which impact DRC), implement new and advanced CAD tools, and develop and expand the parts library. The focus will be on design work requiring creative thinking, in addition to knowledge of engineering principles, design practices and manufacturing methods/procedures.
Qualifications / Education / Experience
General duties for these roles include but are not limited to Communication Systems modeling, RF design, circuit and system analysis and simulation in ADS and MATLAB, setting up and running EM solves in HFSS, running characterization and verification tests like IIP2/3, NF, P1dB, SNR, Phase Noise, Distortion, Group Delay, etc., and automating them using Python, creating mechanical models in SolidWorks, laying out PCB designs in Allegro, etc. The employee will also be expected to branch out of their comfort zone if the need arises to fill roles not yet filled, and so a fearless, ambitious, and dynamic individual is highly desired.Current Engineering student
