Process Development Engineer I with our U.S. Design Engineering Team


Essential Functions and Competencies

  • Focus on basic process design and documentation for customer products and/or related tooling, resulting in a product or tooling that supports the manufacturing environment, if applicable, to meet both the customers’ requirements and the Benchmark manufacturing support groups’ requirements
  • Develop basic diagrams of components and assemblies
  • Make engineering computations and write/edit specifications
  • Create modified basic designs for new or existing products and tooling
  • Verify completed work, checking dimensions, materials to be used and quantities per the verification plan
  • Interact with vendors to ensure proper fabrication of mechanical components for product, testers and tooling
  • Assist assembly of tooling, test fixtures and prototypes
  • Perform basic design duties such as tolerance analysis, material selection and selection of fabrication methods
  • Provide assistance to the Hardware Design, Software Design, PCB Design, Functional Test and ICT test for product, test and tooling development
  • Contact and work with vendors to understand Customer and BEI requirements
  • Follow project plan and report project status to leadership
  • Develop project proposals and associated cost estimates
  • Perform DFX reviews; Create necessary documentation
  • Develop an understanding of Design for Excellence philosophy; Promote with customers
  • Communicate with customer technical personnel regarding technical issues
  • Communicate technical challenges and work with peers to create and implement solutions
  • Work with customers to understand requirements regarding mechanical design
  • Work with Sustaining Engineering (product, process, test and quality) to develop products that leverage Benchmarks manufacturing and test processes
  • Participate in the development of advanced/new technologies related to plastics, sheet metal, castings and machined parts and processes
  • Drive and lead research and development for new design methods and tools
  • Provide research and development for new design methods and tools
  • Assist in the coordination of process engineering strategies for Benchmark Customers
  • Set up and maintain the process for Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA)
  • Create and check others detailed drawings of mechanical components using industry standard drafting practices
  • Participate in a continuous improvement activity with complete documentation, including a follow up review with the team in a presentation format
  • Focus on intermediate level process design and documentation for customer products and/or related tooling, resulting in a product or tooling that supports the manufacturing environment, if applicable, to meet both the customers’ requirements and the Benchmark manufacturing support groups’
  • Lead less experienced engineers in best practices
  • Create new or modified designs for new or existing products and tooling
  • Perform intermediate level design duties such as tolerance analysis, material selection and selection of fabrication methods
  • Focus on complex level process design and documentation for customer products and/or related tooling, resulting in a product or tooling that supports the manufacturing environment, if applicable, to meet both the customers’ requirements and the Benchmark manufacturing support groups’ requirements
  • Develop complex level diagrams of components and assemblies
  • Perform complex level design duties such as tolerance analysis, material selection and selection of fabrication methods
  • Initiate concepts for solving the most complex engineering problems
  • Prepare technical presentations for customers

  • Qualifications / Education / Experience
    • Strong problem solving skills and the ability to make sound technical decisions
    • Proficient day-to-day project activity organization in accordance with development engineering procedures
    • Demonstrate an understanding of process design; Ability to creatively and efficiently design assembly and test processes for various applications and technologies
    • Ability to make independent judgments using sound engineering principles and techniques
    • Effective organization and prioritization skills
    • Effective interpersonal skills
    • Proven ability to complete projects in a timely manner
    • Ability to support a 24/7 global business operation as required
    • Demonstrate discretion, confidentiality, independent judgment and professionalism when representing the company
    • Excellent written and verbal communication, as well as presentation skills
    • Ability to work well individually or in teams
    • Demonstrate knowledge of the manufacturing process for sheet-metal, plastic parts, castings, machined parts and electromechanical mechanisms
    • Demonstrate knowledge of material selection for manufacturing customer products, tooling and test fixtures
    • Demonstrate knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications
    • Capable of performing a process capability analysis on a production process
    • Understanding of and ability to use continuous improvement tools
    • Available for travel up to 10-20% of the time, including day and overnight travel as required


    8 years of manufacturing engineering experience
    • Expert in advanced technologies and applications; ASQ certified
    • Demonstrate a superior understanding of Design for Excellence (DFX) philosophy and promote with customers

    4 year Engineering or Technical Degree
